Merits Of Median :
- It is rigidly defined.
- It is easy to understand and calculate.
- Since median is a positional average, it is not affected at all by the extreme observations.
- Median can be calculated for a distribution with open and classes.
- It is the only average to be used with qualitative characteristic.
Demerits Of Median :
- In case of even number of observations for an underground data median can't be determined exactly.
- Since median is a positional average, it is not based on each and every item of distribution.
- Median is not suitable for further mathematical treatments.
- Median is affected more by fluctuation of sampling as compared to mean.
